COHA - OPTTA History

The Canadian Oil Heat Association (COHA) was a national association established in 1983 by a group of fuel oil dealers in Ontario who understood the benefits of working together on matters that affected the oil heat industry. Over the next 20 years, COHA grew into an organization that at one time boasted a membership of over four hundred professionals including fuel oil dealers, major oil companies, equipment manufacturers, wholesalers, contractors and trainers.

In June 2004, an Ontario Chapter of COHA was created to address the specific needs of the Ontario oil heat market. COHA has other provincial chapters in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland & Labrador.

In 2017, following a restructuring of the National organization, the Members of COHA-Ontario decided to expand their support activities to other sectors in the Ontario petroleum industry. Not only would the Association represent their Member’s interests in the oil heat industry, but also in the oil fired power generation and product distribution segments of our Member's offerings. As a result, the Members instructed their Board of Directors to rename and rebrand the Association to represent those activities in 2018.

COHA Ontario’s remodeling is complete and is now the Ontario Petroleum Transporters and Technicians Association (OPTTA).

OPTTA is the collective voice that continually provides members in Ontario with an impacting presence in 4 key areas of business development and public consumer support that are important to member’s ongoing success. They are; technical development and training, representation on industry regulatory bodies and standard-writing organizations that direct or create policies, engagement with insurance companies that provide coverage for our members and clients and to be a resource for the public with current and accurate information regarding oil fired appliances, equipment and storage tank systems.

Led by a Board of Directors representing Ontario’s major geographical regions, the Association’s actions continue the spirit of our COHA founders. This lives on in today’s Association as evidenced by our members’ generous volunteer participation and support of OPTTA’s important operating committees. The professional contribution of these many individuals, representing Ontario’s leading petroleum distributors and transporters, equipment manufacturers, service contractors, and the nation’s largest fuel oil companies, is helping steer the this division of the petroleum industry into the future.
