Partnership brings paperless, robust Health and Safety program to OPTTA members

March 1, 2022 Newburgh, ON – Ontario Petroleum Transporters & Technicians Association (OPTTA) is pleased to announce a partnership with Univerus Health and Safety Inc. for the shared use of their Health and Safety software program. As a centralized resource, OPTTA members will have access to the Health and Safety management and reporting software through an affordable pricing model.

“We are excited to be able to bring both health and safety tools and program content to our members” said Jim Wood, OPTTA CEO. “This is a real step forward in delivering world class Health and Safety to our industry.”

The Management Software is robust and covers all leading and lagging activities that support progressive health and safety programs. OPTTA members will have access to; Training Trackers, Incident Reporting, Inspections, Corrective Actions, Risk Assessments, Equipment, Safety Meetings, Job Plans and Work Observations among others. It provides a single access point for Health and Safety activities and critical reporting.

“We’re very happy to be working with the OPTTA,” said Jason Woodrow, Executive VP at Univerus. “It is the perfect application for organizations that don’t necessarily have resources in-house for a full-time Health and Safety Officer. Between Jim’s knowledge and the Management software, OPTTA members will have access to the tools and expertise they need to manage Health and Safety confidently.”

The program features Mobile applications that are extremely useful for remote work, and ideal for use during incident reporting, site inspections, and workplace observation.

The Management software fits well with the Association’s collaborative model as it provides OPTTA staff with an overview of the Health & Safety activities within their member group.

“Members will be able to take advantage of the OPTTA program, or they can implement their own program.” said Wood. “This brings great value to our members, giving visibility into critical health and safety metrics at a fraction of the cost of hiring a fulltime employee.”

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week November 1 – 7, 2020

unnamed.png

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON, November 2, 2020) – As November 1-7, 2020 marks Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week safety experts are urging people to be extremely vigilant with fuel-burning appliances to prevent deadly exposure to Carbon Monoxide (CO) – an invisible, odourless, poisonous gas that can seriously harm or even kill.

As residents and communities have been asked to modify their lifestyle and are spending increasingly more time at home during these unprecedented times, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) wants to remind people of additional means by which they can keep themselves safe in and around their homes.

“With the onset of cold weather months comes the increased use of furnaces and fireplaces and now outdoor heaters,” says John Marshall, Director of TSSA’s Fuels Safety Program. “If not installed, serviced and maintained regularly, fuel-burning appliances can emit deadly levels of CO gas.”

With over 65% of all CO injuries and deaths in Ontario occurring in homes and the average dwelling having roughly 4-6 fuel-burning appliances that produce CO, awareness of the safety hazards  involved with CO is the first step in reducing these risks for you and your family. The second step is to take action to prevent hazardous incidents and potential serious health impacts including fatalities.

Take Action, Think Safe:

  • Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a TSSA-certified fuel technician

  • Install and regularly test certified CO alarms in your home

“Safety is a shared responsibility” adds John Marshall, “we all have a role to play and by taking these two actions we can lower CO risks in our homes.”

Lastly, know the symptoms of CO poisoning. They are similar to the flu – nausea, headache, burning eyes, confusion and drowsiness – except there is no fever. If they appear, it is imperative to get everyone outside to fresh air immediately and call 911 or the local fire department.

TSSA Launches 'Trunk Slammers' Enforcement Program

Trunk-Slammer-Banner.jpg

Fuels work can be dangerous—even deadly—if not performed by a professional. To drive that message to the people of Ontario, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) used Fraud Prevention Month as an opportunity to launch the Trunk Slammers Enforcement Program.

Uncertified gas technicians and unregistered contractors, aka ‘trunk slammers’, are not certified or registered with TSSA. There is no assurance they will comply with safety regulations, since they have already disregarded the law by working without being certified or registered.

Click here to access the TSSA’s full Press Release about the launch of their Trunk Slammers Enforcement Program, and read stories from homeowners who have been negatively effected by fraud in the fuel-oil industry, including one from Marlene:

“I went through an entire winter with no heat. I could never get a hold of this man, couldn't talk to him. From what I understand now, the intake pipe which draws air from outside to pump inside of my house was not hooked up, so my furnace was only drawing air from the inside of my home and pumping the same air back in.”

Improper installation and poor work are the major contributing factors to the fuels- and carbon monoxide (CO) related risks in people’s homes. TSSA is concentrating on the prosecution of individuals providing gas services without proper certification and registration – with a particular focus on repeat offenders – also known as ‘trunk slammers’.
